Making Roger Wilco Better, Again.

+System +User Experience on 21 April, 2009

Topics and Archives have been added. This was overdue - not surprisingly, the superceded single page design (showing bulk posts across multiple non-related topics) was not really cutting it, info design wise.  In part, this is why I’ve been silent on Roger Wilco for the last few months. It was just too hard to represent different interests in a single place. I’m still a bit confused as to what Roger Wilco is. After all, it never was that clearly defined

This site was born in July 2008 and is home to, well, anything I want - really. That probably means a varied collection of interesting articles from other smart folk and brief commentary on anything that takes my fancy.

Over time it’s become a weird intersection of design and user experience meets technical and analytical topics while the dudes at the back of class talk about film, music and stuff they saw down the street.

That’s working for me, and maybe topics and archives can make it work for you too.

Making Roger Wilco Better

+System on 2 February, 2009

A few minor but notable changes to Roger Wilco today.

  1. Homebrew dynamic meta-data (description, page title) based on the contents of each post
This should take care of the current poorly defined, repetitive, and mildly embarrassing page descriptions that you might see via a site search from one of the major search engines.
  2. Comments! You can now freely express your opinion on any post—if you’re not spamming—on Roger Wilco. Cheers to Derek Powazek whose code, I modified for my own purposes.
  3. Behind the scenes Wordpress changes that make me feel good on the inside for being less of a hack (I’m still definitely a hack).

What’s next? —Archives.

Automatic out of office reply

+System on 6 December, 2008

It’s been slow around here the last seven or so weeks - I’ve been happily disconnected from the digital world while touring through Northern South-East Asia and India, suckers.

While I was dodging bullets in Mumbai, Rogerwilco’s web host threw in the towel. We’re both back now, so expect some content and site improvements to follow.

I could do a retrospective summary of interesting things that happened in my absence, but instead, let the record show that actually, nothing happened.

A question of etiquette - citing all sources

+System on 23 August, 2008

Lately, a significant chunk of my daily read comes from online writers served up via my aggregator of choice. In doing this, I’ve noticed a lot of content crossover, by which I mean - frequent writers often serving up the same articles and crediting the source from which they found the content. Merlin Mann suggests doing that very thing in his article What Makes For a Good Blog?

I found this via Daring Fireball and credited it as such in my previous post.

Seems ethical to me, although this practice clearly has potential to become farcical i.e. via DF via kottke via writer via writer.

Burn my feed

+System on 16 August, 2008

Rogerwilco’s RSS2 feed is now piping via feedburner. If you care to update your aggregator you can do so with feed://feeds.feedburner.com/rogerwilco. The former RSS URL still works - for those that can’t be bothered.

Hello, world

+System on 23 July, 2008

Oh, Hello World - how could I delete you? Even if you are uncategorised and Wordpress thinks you’re just a placeholder.
